The Suzuki Swift 4×4 is the only compact AWD manual in the Hertz Iceland fleet — small enough to park in Reykjavík, capable enough on winter main roads and narrow Westfjords mountain passes, and genuinely more manoeuvrable than any larger SUV on Iceland’s narrower gravel routes. Not recommended for F-roads or Highland tracks — too small for river crossings and the demands of true highland terrain. Minimum age 20. Or-similar booking.

Suzuki Swift 4×4 Rental Iceland: Compact AWD Manual Guide

The Suzuki Swift 4×4 occupies a unique position in the Hertz Iceland fleet — the only vehicle that combines AWD traction with a genuinely compact footprint. Where every other AWD option in the fleet is a mid-size or full-size SUV, the Swift is a supermini. That difference matters in Iceland in ways that aren’t immediately obvious.

On the Westfjords’ narrow mountain roads, the Swift fits where a Land Cruiser feels wide. In central Reykjavík’s tighter parking situations, the Swift manoeuvres where a Defender requires planning. On Iceland’s narrower gravel access tracks to viewpoints, waterfalls, and rural accommodation — the routes that aren’t F-roads but aren’t quite main roads either — the Swift’s compact dimensions reduce the anxiety that larger AWD SUVs accumulate on these stretches.

What the Swift is not: it is not a highland track vehicle. F-roads, river crossings, and the Icelandic Highlands require a purpose-built 4×4 with meaningful ground clearance and water fording capability. The Swift’s AWD is designed for traction on paved and standard gravel roads in all weather — not for the technical demands of highland tracks. For F-road access, see our 4×4 fleet.

? Hertz Insider Tip

“The Swift’s real advantage in Iceland isn’t the AWD system — it’s the combination of AWD and compact size. In the Westfjords, where the mountain roads narrow to single-track with passing places and the switchbacks are genuinely tight, smaller is meaningfully better. The Swift fits these roads in a way that makes the driving experience enjoyable rather than stressful — and the AllGrip AWD means winter conditions on those same roads don’t become a reason to turn back.”

Is the Suzuki Swift 4×4 Good for Driving in Iceland?

Yes — for Iceland’s paved main roads, standard gravel routes, narrow Westfjords mountain roads, and year-round winter traction, the Swift’s compact AWD combination is genuinely unique in the fleet.

  • The Small 4×4 Advantage: Iceland has a significant number of roads that sit between “main road” and “F-road” — narrow gravel access tracks, mountain passes in the Westfjords and East Fjords, and rural routes to accommodation and viewpoints that are not technically demanding but benefit from AWD traction and a smaller footprint. The Swift handles these better than any larger 4×4 in the fleet.
  • Westfjords Specifically: The Westfjords mountain roads are narrow, winding, and often single-track — some of Iceland’s most spectacular scenery is accessed via roads where a Land Cruiser or Defender feels significantly wider than comfortable. The Swift is better proportioned for these roads than any other AWD vehicle in the fleet.
  • Winter AWD Traction: AllGrip AWD with winter tyres provides confident traction on Iceland’s cleared main roads in snow and ice — the same AWD advantage as larger SUVs, in a vehicle that costs less to rent and uses less fuel.
  • Fuel Efficiency: 83 PS from a 1.2L petrol engine makes the Swift the most fuel-efficient AWD vehicle in the Hertz Iceland fleet. On the Ring Road’s longer stretches, the running cost difference vs a diesel SUV is meaningful over a 7–10 day itinerary.
  • Real-World Space: 265 litres of boot space — the smallest in the AWD category. Best suited to 1–2 people travelling with soft bags. Hard-shell suitcases are a genuine packing challenge in this vehicle.
  • F-Road limitation: The Swift is not recommended for F-roads and Highland tracks. The reason is practical, not policy: the Swift’s ground clearance, water fording depth, and structural capability are not designed for the demands of highland tracks, river crossings, or loose volcanic terrain. For F-road access, you need a purpose-built highland 4×4 — see safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide.
  • Safety: Standard suite includes Dual Sensor Brake Support (autonomous emergency braking), Lane Departure Warning, Weaving Alert, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. For a full guide to driving safely in Iceland’s conditions, see safe.hertz.is.

When Is the Suzuki Swift 4×4 the Right Choice?

  • The Westfjords: The strongest argument for the Swift in Iceland. Narrow mountain roads, spectacular scenery, and driving conditions where compact dimensions are more useful than high ground clearance. The Swift is better suited to the Westfjords than any other AWD vehicle in the fleet.
  • Winter driving on main roads: AWD with winter tyres on Iceland’s cleared Ring Road, Golden Circle, and South Coast — the same traction advantage as a larger 4×4, in a smaller, more fuel-efficient package.
  • Solo travellers and couples travelling extremely light: 1–2 people with soft bags and a flexible summer or winter itinerary focused on paved and standard gravel roads.
  • Budget AWD: The Swift is one of the most affordable AWD rentals in the Hertz Iceland fleet — the right choice when you want AWD winter traction without the cost of a mid-size SUV.

⚠️ Not ideal if:

  • You plan any F-road or Highland driving — the Swift is not designed for these conditions. Ground clearance, water fording depth, and structural capability make it unsuitable for highland tracks, river crossings, and volcanic terrain. See safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide for F-road eligible vehicles.
  • You are 2 people with full-size hard-shell suitcases — 265 litres with seats up is very limited. Soft bags are not just recommended, they are essentially required for comfortable packing.
  • You need an automatic transmission — the Swift 4×4 is manual only. For an automatic AWD, the Hyundai Tucson PHEV or Kia Sportage Automatic are the closest alternatives.
  • You are 3+ people with luggage — the boot is too small for a comfortable multi-day group trip with standard luggage.
  • You need a guaranteed specific model — or-similar booking.

Rental Requirements & Restrictions

  • Minimum Age: 20 years old.
  • License: Valid driving license held for a minimum of 1 year. IDP required if license is not in Roman script.
  • Payment: Valid credit card in the main renter’s name required at pickup.
  • F-Road Policy: NOT RECOMMENDED. The Suzuki Swift is not designed for F-roads, Highland tracks, or river crossings. Stay on paved roads and standard maintained gravel routes.
  • Luggage: Soft bags strongly recommended — boot space is 265 litres with all seats in use.

Inside the Suzuki Swift

The Swift cabin is compact — there is no other word for it. Two adults in the front seats have comfortable space; two adults in the rear have adequate space for shorter trips. The driving position is higher than a conventional hatchback thanks to the AllGrip AWD system’s raised ride height, which gives better forward visibility than the vehicle’s small dimensions might suggest.

The 5-speed manual gearbox is light and short-throw — easy to manage in city traffic and precise on Iceland’s mountain road switchbacks. In the Westfjords, where the road narrows and the view opens up simultaneously, the Swift’s compact dimensions and responsive steering make the driving experience feel appropriately sized for the landscape — you’re not wrestling a large vehicle through a tight mountain pass, you’re placed confidently in it.

The 83 PS 1.2L petrol engine is adequate rather than powerful — the Swift is not a fast car, and doesn’t need to be. On Iceland’s open Ring Road sections, it cruises comfortably at the legal speed limit. On hill climbs, it requires the gearbox to be used actively, which is where the manual transmission’s advantage is most apparent.

AllGrip AWD operates silently in the background — on winter main roads, the traction difference vs a 2WD compact is noticeable on starts and on gentle bends, even before the road becomes demanding. The Swift doesn’t feel like a compromised AWD vehicle; it feels like a small car that genuinely has AWD.

The boot’s 265 litres is the honest constraint of choosing this vehicle — pack soft bags, pack light, and the Swift delivers a driving experience that no larger AWD in the fleet replicates.

History of Suzuki

Suzuki was founded in Japan in 1909, initially producing weaving looms before pivoting to motorised bicycles and then automobiles in the 1950s. The company built its reputation on small, practical, and affordable vehicles — and, crucially, on compact 4×4 technology that preceded many larger manufacturers’ AWD programmes. The original Suzuki Jimny, launched in 1970, was one of the world’s first mass-market compact 4×4s.

The Swift, launched in 2004 and now in its fourth generation, has been offered with Suzuki’s AllGrip AWD system since 2017 — making it one of very few compact superminis in the world available with genuine four-wheel drive. The AllGrip system offers four selectable modes (Auto, Sport, Snow, Lock), each calibrated for different traction demands — from dry motorway to slippery winter road to low-speed technical terrain.

Renting a Suzuki Swift 4×4 with Hertz Iceland means choosing the vehicle that proves AWD and compact size are not mutually exclusive — and in Iceland’s varied driving conditions, that combination is more useful than it might first appear.

Road Trips with the Suzuki Swift 4×4

These routes are where the Swift’s compact AWD combination earns its place — narrow roads where size matters, winter conditions where AWD matters, and fuel-efficient touring where running costs matter.

The Westfjords

Reykjavík Borgarnes Ísafjörður Látrabjarg Dynjandi Reykjavík

The Westfjords is the Swift’s defining Iceland route — and the one that best explains why compact size and AWD belong together here. The mountain roads connecting the Westfjords’ fjords are genuinely narrow, with passing places, switchbacks, and occasional gravel sections that are maintained but tight. In a full-size SUV these roads require planning and attention. In the Swift, they feel appropriately sized — the compact dimensions reduce width anxiety on single-track sections, and the AllGrip AWD handles the gravel surface changes confidently without requiring driver intervention. Látrabjarg’s bird cliffs, the Dynjandi waterfall cascade, and Ísafjörður’s charming town are among Iceland’s least-visited major destinations. The Swift is one of the better vehicles to reach them in. Pick up at Hertz Ísafjörður Airport if flying one leg.

Best Time: June–August for best road conditions and puffin season at Látrabjarg. Some Westfjords mountain roads remain closed until late May — check road.is before departure. Stay on maintained gravel roads only — no unmarked tracks.

Winter Ring Road

KEF Reykjavík South Coast Vík Höfn Akureyri Reykjavík

The Swift 4×4’s winter argument is straightforward: AllGrip AWD with Snow mode and winter tyres on Iceland’s cleared Ring Road, at significantly lower running costs than any mid-size or full-size AWD SUV in the fleet. For a solo traveller or couple on a winter Ring Road loop where the priority is AWD confidence on cleared main roads and fuel economy across a 1,332 km loop, the Swift delivers both at a lower daily rate than a Duster, Bigster, or any PHEV AWD. The Snow lock mode keeps traction calibrated for winter surfaces without driver management. Check road.is and en.vedur.is before every winter departure. Stay on cleared Route 1 — no mountain shortcuts or unmarked routes. For winter driving guidance, visit safe.hertz.is.

Winter Tip: Engage Snow mode on any surface where traction is uncertain — don’t wait until you need it. Allow significantly more time for winter Ring Road driving than in summer. Pack soft bags only — boot space is limited in winter when you also need to carry extra layers and emergency kit.

The Golden Circle & South Coast

Reykjavík Þingvellir Geysir Gullfoss Seljalandsfoss Skógafoss Vík

Combining the Golden Circle with the South Coast over 2–3 days is entirely on paved roads and well within the Swift’s capability in any season. The Swift’s fuel efficiency makes the combined ~700 km return from Reykjavík one of the cheapest AWD itineraries in the fleet to run. AllGrip AWD handles any overnight frost or early morning icy patches on the Golden Circle’s interior stretches and the South Coast’s exposed coastal sections without the driver needing to change behaviour. The Swift’s compact footprint makes the waterfall car parks at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss straightforward to navigate even when busy. For a solo traveller or couple who wants AWD confidence and low running costs on Iceland’s most popular routes, the Swift makes the case simply.

Best Time: Year-round on paved roads. Start the Golden Circle early to beat peak crowds. Check road.is before departure in shoulder season — the South Coast can be affected by unexpected weather year-round.

Suzuki Swift Rental in Iceland FAQ

    • Can I drive the Suzuki Swift 4×4 on F-roads?
No you cannot. Unlike a policy restriction, this is a practical limitation: the Swift is too small for Iceland’s highland F-roads, river crossings, and volcanic terrain. Its ground clearance, water fording depth, and structural capability are not designed for those conditions. The AllGrip AWD is calibrated for paved roads, standard gravel, and winter main roads — not highland tracks. For F-road eligible vehicles, check safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide.
    • Why choose a small 4×4 over a larger AWD SUV in Iceland?
The Suzuki Swift 4×4’s advantage is specifically its combination of compact size and AWD traction — something no other vehicle in the Hertz Iceland fleet offers. In the Westfjords, narrow mountain roads are genuinely easier in a smaller vehicle. In Reykjavík, tight parking situations are simpler. On standard gravel access tracks to viewpoints and rural accommodation, the Swift’s footprint creates less anxiety than a full-size SUV. If your Iceland itinerary stays on paved and standard gravel roads — including in winter — the Swift delivers AWD confidence at a lower cost and with easier manoeuvring than any larger AWD in the fleet.
    • How much luggage fits in the Suzuki Swift?
The boot holds 265 litres with all seats in use — the smallest in the AWD category. This fits 1 small hard-shell case or 2 soft bags. Soft bags are strongly recommended — hard-shell suitcases for two people will not fit comfortably. Folding the rear seats creates 947 litres, which is practical for a solo traveller with gear. Be realistic about luggage before booking this vehicle.
    • Is the Suzuki Swift good for winter driving in Iceland?
Yes — on cleared main roads. AllGrip AWD with Snow lock mode and winter tyres provides confident traction on Iceland’s Ring Road and major paved routes in winter conditions. The Snow mode keeps traction calibrated for slippery surfaces without requiring driver input. Stay on cleared main roads — the Swift is not designed for uncleared tracks or F-roads in any season. For winter driving guidance, visit safe.hertz.is.
    • Is the Suzuki Swift 4×4 a guaranteed model?
No — it is rented on an “or similar” basis. If this exact model is unavailable, you’ll receive a comparable compact AWD manual. If you need a guaranteed specific vehicle, see our Guaranteed Model options including the BMW X3, BMW X5, Toyota Land Cruiser 250, Range Rover Sport PHEV, Land Rover Discovery Sport, and Land Rover Defender 130.
    • Does Hertz Iceland offer Roadside Assistance?
Yes. Roadside Assistance can be added at the rental desk at pickup — not bookable online in advance. It costs 1,990 ISK/day standalone, or 990 ISK/day when added with MAX Coverage. If you need assistance during your rental, pay the service fee at the time, then bring your receipt when you return the car — we’ll refund the covered amount to your card on file. Emergency line: +354 858 0499 (24/7).
