Toyota Aygo Rental Iceland: Budget City Car Guide

The Toyota Aygo is the most affordable and most compact rental in the Hertz Iceland fleet — a 1.0L petrol manual city car designed for urban driving, summer day trips, and budget-first solo or couple travel. At 3,700mm long with a 9.4-metre turning circle, it is the easiest vehicle to park anywhere in Iceland, from central Reykjavík’s tighter streets to the narrow car parks at busy tourist attractions in summer.

The Aygo’s commercial case is specific and honest. It is the right choice for summer, for city-based itineraries, and for travellers whose budget is the primary constraint. It is not the right choice for winter driving, groups of more than two with luggage, or long Ring Road itineraries where comfort and boot space matter across multiple days.

Is the Toyota Aygo Good for Driving in Iceland?

Yes — in summer, on paved roads, for solo travellers and couples travelling light with a city-first itinerary. Not suitable for winter, groups, or luggage-heavy trips.

• Summer Day Trips: The Golden Circle’s 300 km loop and shorter South Coast runs are within comfortable range for the Aygo in summer — paved roads, manageable fuel stops, and the Aygo’s fuel efficiency keeps running costs low.
• Boot Space Reality: 231 litres with all seats up — the smallest in the fleet. This fits 1 soft bag comfortably, or 2 very small bags. Hard-shell suitcases are a genuine challenge. Travelling light is not optional in this vehicle — it is the condition of booking it.
• Fuel Efficiency: The 1.0L 3-cylinder returns real-world fuel consumption that makes it one of the cheapest petrol vehicles to run in Iceland — a meaningful factor on a budget-first itinerary where every ISK counts.

When Is the Toyota Aygo the Right Choice?

• Summer city and day trip driving: Reykjavík exploration, Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon, Reykjanes Peninsula — all in summer on paved roads, for a solo traveller or couple travelling with soft bags only.
• Extreme budget travel in summer: The Aygo is the most affordable rental in the Hertz Iceland fleet. If budget is the overriding constraint and the itinerary is city-focused in summer, the Aygo delivers that at the lowest possible daily rate.
• Solo travellers: One adult with a single soft bag is the Aygo’s ideal occupant. The front seats are comfortable; the rear seats are nominal for adults on any drive longer than 30 minutes.

⚠️ Not ideal — and when to choose something else:

• Winter driving: 2WD FWD city car in Icelandic winter conditions is not appropriate. We recommend at minimum a mid-size AWD for winter. See compact 4×4 options or mid-size cars.
• Two people with full luggage: 231 litres fits one soft bag. Two people with any meaningful luggage require a larger vehicle — see the Toyota Yaris Manual as the next step up.
• Ring Road itineraries: The Aygo is not a comfortable long-distance vehicle. For a 7–10 day Ring Road loop, a larger, more refined car makes the multi-hour daily driving stages significantly less fatiguing.

• Groups of 3+: Rear legroom is minimal for adults. Three adults on any significant trip is uncomfortable.

• License: Valid driving license held for a minimum of 1 year. IDP required if license is not in Roman script.
• Payment: Valid credit card in the main renter’s name required at pickup.
• F-Road Policy: STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. Not permitted on F-roads or Highland tracks under any circumstances.
• Luggage: Soft bags only — hard-shell suitcases are not practically manageable in this vehicle.

Inside the Toyota Aygo

The Aygo cabin is a study in doing a lot with a small space. The seats are more supportive than the vehicle’s price point might suggest — Toyota’s interior designers have clearly spent time making the front seats genuinely comfortable for adults on day-length drives. The dashboard is clean and modern: an 9-inch touchscreen on the upper trims handles navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and the driving position gives good forward visibility for a vehicle this small.

The 5-speed manual gearbox is light and undemanding — a city car transmission designed to be operated frequently in traffic rather than worked hard on open roads. In Reykjavík’s streets it’s exactly as easy as it needs to be. On the Golden Circle’s open highway stretches, fifth gear at the speed limit is smooth and economical.

What the Aygo’s cabin doesn’t offer is space. Rear passengers sit noticeably closer to the front seats than in any other vehicle in the fleet — two adults in the back for any significant distance becomes uncomfortable. The boot’s 231 litres loads one soft bag with ease and a second with careful packing. Approaching it with the expectation that it’s a small car — and planning accordingly — means it delivers exactly what it promises.

In peak summer Reykjavík, where parking spaces in the city centre are competitive and the car parks at popular attractions fill quickly, the Aygo’s compact dimensions are a genuine practical advantage that larger, more comfortable cars can’t replicate.

History of Toyota Aygo

The Toyota Aygo was first introduced in 2005 as a joint project between Toyota and PSA Peugeot Citroën — a collaboration that produced the Aygo alongside the Peugeot 107 and Citroën C1 on a shared platform. The partnership was designed to pool development costs for a segment where margins are slim and engineering efficiency matters above all else.

The current Aygo X, launched in 2022, is Toyota’s first fully independent design for the nameplate — no shared platform, no badge-engineered siblings.
