The VW Golf Automatic is a compact petrol city car — one of the most popular automatic economy rentals in the Hertz Iceland fleet. Refined, fuel-efficient, and well-equipped for Iceland’s paved main roads and summer day trips. Not permitted on F-roads or Highland tracks. Minimum age 20. Or-similar booking. A VW Golf Manual is also available at a slightly lower rate — see the Manual Version here.
VW Golf Rental Iceland: Automatic Compact Car Guide
The Volkswagen Golf Automatic is one of the most consistently popular rental choices for tourists in Iceland — a refined, well-equipped compact that combines the familiarity of Europe’s best-selling car with automatic transmission ease. For travellers who want a step up from a basic economy hatchback without the cost of a mid-size SUV, the VW Golf hire delivers a noticeably more refined driving experience than smaller alternatives at a still-accessible price point.
Volkswagen Golf rental Iceland in the automatic version carries a slightly higher daily rate than the VW Golf Manual — and remains consistently the more popular choice among international visitors who prefer automatic transmission.
This vehicle is suited to Iceland’s paved main roads and summer day trips. Not permitted on F-roads — for AWD and Highland access, see our 4×4 Fleet.

? Hertz Insider Tip
“The Golf’s DSG dual-clutch automatic is one of the best gearboxes in the compact car segment — faster and more responsive than a conventional torque-converter automatic, and significantly more refined than the CVT found in many rival economy cars. On Iceland’s Ring Road highway sections, it holds higher gears efficiently at cruise speed; in Reykjavík’s city traffic, it downshifts quickly and without fuss. If you want automatic ease with a gearbox that actually engages with the road, the Golf DSG delivers it.”
Is the VW Golf Automatic Good for Driving in Iceland?
Yes — for Iceland’s paved main roads in summer and year-round city driving, the Golf Automatic is one of the most refined and popular compact choices in the fleet.
Why Automatic Golf: the DSG dual-clutch automatic is more engaging and responsive than a CVT, making the Golf more satisfying to drive than most compact automatics at this price point. No clutch, no gear changes, no stalling on Reykjavík’s hill starts — all the ease of automatic with genuine driving character.
Real-World Space: 381 litres of boot space — fitting 1 large hard-shell suitcase or 2 smaller soft bags with all seats in use. Larger than the Yaris (286L) and Hyundai i10 (252L), suited to couples or small groups travelling with standard luggage.
Fuel Efficiency: The petrol Golf is among the most fuel-efficient conventional petrol compact cars in its class — important on longer Iceland routes where fuel stations can be 80–100 km apart.
Driving Refinement: The Golf 8’s chassis, noise insulation, and ride quality are noticeably above the economy hatchback segment — a meaningful difference on 4–6 hour Ring Road driving days.
Safety: VW IQ.Drive suite standard — Front Assist AEB (car and pedestrian), Travel Assist (adaptive cruise + lane centring), Side Assist blind spot monitoring. 5-star Euro NCAP (2020, 96% adult occupant protection). For a full guide to driving safely in Iceland’s conditions, see safe.hertz.is.
What it is not: 2WD front-wheel drive. No F-road capability, no AWD. For winter driving, a 4×4 is strongly recommended.
When Is the VW Golf Automatic the Right Choice?
Summer (June–August) on paved roads: Golden Circle, South Coast, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and Ring Road on Iceland’s paved main roads. The Golf’s refinement makes longer summer driving days genuinely comfortable.
Tourists who want a familiar car: The Golf is Europe’s best-selling compact car — most European visitors have driven one. The automatic version removes any unfamiliarity with an unknown gearbox in an unfamiliar country.
Couples and small groups travelling light: 1–3 adults with soft bags and a paved-road summer itinerary — the Golf’s sweet spot.
Drivers who want automatic refinement at an economy rate: The DSG automatic is more responsive and more engaging than most automatics at this price tier. The most popular automatic economy choice in our Iceland fleet for a reason.
⚠️ Not ideal if:
You plan any F-road or Highland driving — strictly forbidden. 2WD only. See safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide for F-road eligible vehicles.
You are travelling in winter — 2WD FWD in Icelandic winter conditions requires significant caution. A 4×4 is strongly recommended.
You prefer manual and a lower rate — the VW Golf Manual is available at a slightly lower daily rate.
You are 3 or more people with full hard-shell luggage — 381 litres is suited to 1–2 people with standard luggage. For larger groups, consider a mid-size SUV.
You need a guaranteed specific model — or-similar booking.
Rental Requirements & Restrictions
Minimum Age: 20 years old.
License: Valid driving license held for a minimum of 1 year. IDP required if license is not in Roman script.
Payment: Valid credit card in the main renter’s name required at pickup.
Transmission: Automatic DSG — if you need manual, book the VW Golf Manua instead.
F-Road Policy: STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. Not permitted on F-roads or Highland tracks under any circumstances.
Inside the VW Golf
The Golf’s cabin is the benchmark against which most other compact cars are measured — and the reason it remains Europe’s best-selling compact across eight generations. The Golf 8 interior raises that standard further: a 10-inch touchscreen flanked by capacitive touch panels replaces most physical controls, a digital cockpit displays speed, navigation, and vehicle information in a clear, configurable layout, and the build quality in every surface feels a level above the economy compact segment.
The DSG automatic transmission sits at the heart of the driving experience — paired with the Golf’s precise steering and well-damped chassis, it makes the automatic version noticeably more engaging than rivals with CVT gearboxes. In Reykjavík’s varied traffic it shifts quickly and smoothly; on the South Coast highway it holds sixth gear at cruise speed without hunting. The difference between the Golf DSG and a conventional torque-converter automatic is most apparent in the moments when you need a quick downshift — the DSG responds almost immediately, the conventional automatic lags.
Heated seats, front and rear USB-C ports, and wireless device charging are standard on higher trims. The rear seats offer genuine legroom for average-height adults on day trips — not exceptional, but comfortable for Iceland’s typical driving-day durations. The boot’s 381 litres handles two people’s luggage for a Ring Road week if soft bags are used, or one large hard-shell case without issue.
The VW Golf automatic rental experience — the refinement, the familiar interface, the DSG’s responsiveness — is why this is consistently the most popular automatic economy choice in our Iceland fleet.

History of Volkswagen Golf
The Volkswagen Golf was introduced in 1974 as the successor to the Beetle — tasked with replacing the car that had defined Volkswagen for three decades. It succeeded beyond any reasonable expectation. The Golf became Europe’s best-selling car and one of the most consistently popular compact cars globally, refined across eight generations while maintaining the same fundamental proposition: practical, well-built, and better to drive than it needs to be at its price point.
The Golf 8, launched in 2019 and updated in 2023, brings the nameplate’s most advanced technology to its most refined chassis — a digital-first interior, VW’s IQ.Drive safety suite as standard, and the DSG dual-clutch automatic that sets the benchmark for compact car gearboxes. Over 37 million Golfs have been sold worldwide.
Renting a Volkswagen Golf with Hertz Iceland means choosing the most proven compact car in European automotive history — in its most capable and most refined generation.

Road Trips with the VW Golf Automatic
All paved roads — the Golf DSG handles the gearchanges while you handle Iceland. Refined, fuel-efficient, and familiar enough that you can concentrate entirely on the landscape.
The Golden Circle
ReykjavíkÞingvellirGeysirGullfossReykjavík
Iceland’s most popular day trip on Iceland’s most popular automatic compact. The Golden Circle’s 300 km loop is entirely on paved roads — and in the Golf DSG, it requires nothing from you as a driver beyond steering and braking. Travel Assist keeps the highway sections between stops relaxed and unfatiguing; the DSG’s quick downshifts handle the frequent pull-in-and-out at Þingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss car parks without fuss. The Golf’s boot handles a day pack and camera gear without difficulty, and its compact footprint makes the Golden Circle’s busier summer car parks manageable. This is the route the VW Golf hire was designed for.
Best Time: Year-round on paved roads. Start early — leave Reykjavík by 08:00 to reach Geysir and Gullfoss before the main coach tour arrivals from mid-morning.
The South Coast to Vík
ReykjavíkSeljalandsfossSkógafossReynisfjaraVík
The South Coast to Vík is approximately 370 km return from Reykjavík — best done as an overnight trip to remove any time pressure. The drive is entirely on paved Route 1, and the Golf DSG handles the full day without asking anything of the driver. Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, Reynisfjara’s black sand beach, and Vík’s coastal village are all at their best when you arrive relaxed rather than in a hurry. The Golf’s Travel Assist makes the longer highway stretches between stops effortless, and the DSG’s quick response in the stop-start sections around the waterfall car parks is where it’s most noticeably better than a CVT automatic.
Best Time: June–August for best conditions. An overnight in Vík earns you the morning waterfalls before the day visitors arrive. Check road.is before winter departures on this route.
The full 1,332 km Ring Road in a VW Golf automatic rental is achievable in summer when Route 1 is fully paved and clear. Travel Assist earns its keep on the longer straight sections — the East Fjords coastal stretches, the northern coast between Akureyri and Blönduós — keeping the Golf in lane and at a safe following distance without constant driver input. The Golf’s fuel efficiency keeps running costs manageable across a full loop, and at 11 Hertz Iceland locations around the island, one-way rental flexibility is full. Stick to paved Route 1 only — no gravel highland shortcuts in a 2WD compact. Allow 7–10 days for a relaxed full loop.
Best Time: June–August only for the Ring Road in this vehicle. Winter Ring Road in a 2WD compact requires significant caution — a 4×4 is strongly recommended outside summer. Check road.is and en.vedur.is before every departure.
If you want automatic ease and don’t want to manage a gearbox — choose the automatic. The Golf DSG is one of the best automatic gearboxes in the compact segment, more responsive than a CVT. It’s also the more popular choice among international tourists. If you prefer manual control and want a slightly lower daily rate, the VW Golf Manual is the alternative — same car, different transmission.
No. The VW Golf is a 2WD front-wheel-drive vehicle and is strictly forbidden on F-roads and Highland tracks under any circumstances. For F-road access, you need a 4×4 vehicle approved for highland use. Check safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide to see which vehicles in our fleet are F-road eligible.
We generally recommend a 4×4 for Iceland’s winter conditions. The Golf comes with season-appropriate winter tyres, which helps on cleared main roads. However, its 2WD front-wheel-drive layout means significantly less stability and traction than an AWD vehicle on ice or compacted snow. If you choose the Golf in winter, stay on cleared main roads only, check road.is and en.vedur.is before every drive, and avoid mountain passes. For winter driving guidance, visit safe.hertz.is.
The boot holds 381 litres with all seats in use — fitting 1 large hard-shell suitcase or 2 smaller soft bags. Folding the rear seats creates 1,237 litres of flat load space. For 1–2 people travelling with soft bags, space is comfortable for a week-long Iceland itinerary. For 3 people with full hard-shell cases, a larger vehicle is more practical.

Yes. Roadside Assistance can be added at the rental desk at pickup — not bookable online in advance. It costs 1,990 ISK/day standalone, or 990 ISK/day when added with MAX Coverage.
