The Toyota Hilux Camper is a manual 4×4 pickup truck with a fitted camper box — sleeping up to 3 adults, F-road permitted in summer, and capable of year-round main-road camping in Iceland. Available on an “or similar” basis. Available at KEF Airport only. Minimum age 23. Bring your own sleeping bags and bedding — the camper box includes a sleeping platform, kitchenette (sink, hob, refrigerator), and a kitchen equipment kit provided at pickup by our KEF fleet team.

Toyota Hilux Rental Iceland: 4×4 Camper Truck Guide

The Toyota Hilux Camper is the most capable and independent camping vehicle in the Hertz Iceland fleet — a body-on-frame 4×4 pickup truck with a fitted camper box that sleeps up to 3 adults, F-road access in summer, and the kind of ground clearance and mechanical resilience that makes Iceland’s highland tracks genuinely accessible rather than aspirational.

For travellers looking at Hilux rental as a way to combine 4×4 capability with built-in accommodation, this vehicle removes the compromise between going where you want and sleeping where you stop. Unlike rooftop tents, the camper box provides enclosed, standing-height sleeping accommodation for up to 3 adults — with the full Toyota Hilux AWD platform underneath.

Important upfront: the camper box includes a kitchenette with sink, hob (range), and refrigerator, plus a kitchen equipment kit provided by our KEF fleet team at pickup. You will need to bring your own sleeping bags and bedding, and your own food and groceries — everything you need to cook is already in the vehicle.

⚠️ This vehicle is available for pickup and return at Keflavík International Airport (KEF) only.

? Hertz Insider Tip

“The Hilux Camper is a fully self-sufficient setup — sink, hob, and refrigerator are built in, and our KEF fleet team hands you a kitchen equipment kit at pickup. Bring your sleeping bags, your groceries, and a flexible itinerary. Iceland’s highland F-roads open in late June and close before winter, so plan your highland camping for summer. In winter, the Hilux’s 4×4 capability and the camper box’s enclosed sleeping make it one of the most capable winter camping setups in the fleet — but keep to main roads and designated campsites, and check road.is and en.vedur.is before every departure. Always book designated campsites in advance in July — highland sites fill quickly.”

Is the Toyota Hilux Camper Good for Driving in Iceland?

Yes — it’s the most capable 4×4 camping vehicle in the Hertz Iceland fleet, built on one of the world’s most proven truck platforms.

  • F-Road & Highland Capability: The Toyota Hilux is a body-on-frame 4×4 pickup truck — not a crossover SUV. Selectable 4×4 with high and low range, substantial ground clearance, and the mechanical durability that has made the Hilux a global benchmark for demanding terrain. F-road permitted in summer — check road.is and safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide before entering Highland areas.
  • Camping Platform: The fitted camper box provides enclosed, weatherproof sleeping accommodation for up to 3 adults. In Iceland’s unpredictable weather — where a summer evening can turn wet and windy without warning — enclosed sleeping is a meaningful advantage over a rooftop tent.
  • Group Size: Technically 5 adults can sit in the Hilux cab. However, we strongly recommend a maximum of 3 adults per vehicle — the sleeping capacity is 3, so a group of 4 or 5 would need to arrange separate sleeping accommodation for the extra people, which undermines the purpose of the camper.
  • Winter Camping: The Hilux’s 4×4 AWD and the camper box’s enclosed sleeping make this a viable year-round camping vehicle on Iceland’s main roads and standard gravel routes. F-roads are closed in winter — winter camping means Ring Road and paved-road destinations.
  • Manual Transmission: 4×4 manual gives precise engine braking control on steep highland descents — an advantage on technical F-road sections where automatic transmission systems respond less predictably.
  • Safety: For a full guide to driving safely in Iceland’s conditions, see safe.hertz.is. For highland driving specifically, check safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide before every highland departure.

When Is the Toyota Hilux Camper the Right Choice?

  • Summer F-road Highland camping (June–August): The Hilux Camper’s defining purpose — driving into Iceland’s Highlands on F-roads and sleeping where the highland tracks lead. Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, Askja, Kjölur. No hotel booking required, no doubling back to the main road to find accommodation.
  • Year-Round Ring Road camping: The Hilux’s 4×4 with winter tyres and the enclosed camper box make it a genuinely capable year-round setup on Iceland’s main road network — staying at designated campsites along the Ring Road regardless of season.
  • Small groups of 2–3: The camper box sleeps 3. For 2 people, it’s spacious. For 3, it’s functional. For 4 or more, a second vehicle would be needed.

⚠️ Not ideal if:

  • You are 4 or more adults planning to share a single vehicle — the sleeping capacity is 3. We do not recommend 4 or 5 people booking one Hilux Camper for a trip where everyone needs sleeping accommodation.
  • You want cooking equipment included — the camper box provides sleeping platform and storage only. No kitchen, no stove, no water system. Bring your own portable cooking equipment or plan around campsite facilities.
  • You need KEF-independent pickup — this vehicle is available at Keflavík International Airport only. It cannot be picked up or dropped off at any other Hertz Iceland location.
  • You prefer automatic transmission — the Hilux Camper is manual only.
  • You need a guaranteed specific model — booked “or similar,” you may receive a comparable 4×4 camper vehicle.

Rental Requirements & Restrictions

  • Minimum Age: 23 years old.
  • License: Valid driving license held for a minimum of 1 year. IDP required if license is not in Roman script.
  • Payment: Valid credit card in the main renter’s name required at pickup.
  • Pickup/Return: KEF Airport only — no other locations available for this category.
  • Camping: Overnight stays at designated campsites only — wild camping is restricted under Icelandic law. See Inspired by Iceland camping guide for campsite listings.
  • F-Road Policy: Permitted (summer only). Check road.is and safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide before entering any F-road.
  • Recommended Group Size: Maximum 3 adults for camping use (5 can sit in the cab but camper box sleeps 3 only).

Inside the Toyota Hilux Camper

The Toyota Hilux cab is a working truck interior — practical, durable, and designed to function under demanding conditions. Heated seats, a modern infotainment system, and a commanding driving position make the cab comfortable for long driving days, while the manual gearbox gives the driver direct control on highland tracks where gear selection matters.

Behind the cab, the fitted camper box transforms the Hilux’s pickup bed into enclosed, weatherproof sleeping accommodation. This is the core proposition: wherever the Hilux can drive, you can sleep — without pitching a tent in Icelandic wind and rain, without booking accommodation months in advance, and without returning to the main road when the highland track ends.

The camper box provides a double bed sleeping platform for up to 3 adults, a kitchenette with sink, hob, and refrigerator, a dinette seating area with table, and storage throughout. Our KEF fleet team provides a kitchen equipment kit at pickup — pots, pans, and the essentials you need to cook. Bring your own sleeping bags and bedding, and your own groceries. For a group of 3 on a highland itinerary, the Hilux Camper is a genuinely self-sufficient unit — drive, cook, sleep, repeat, without leaving the vehicle platform.

In winter, the enclosed camper box is a meaningfully warmer sleeping option than a rooftop tent in the same conditions — though Iceland’s winter nights are cold and a high-rated sleeping bag is essential regardless of season outside June–August. The Hilux’s 4×4 system and the camper box’s weatherproofing together make this the most self-sufficient all-season camping vehicle in the fleet.

History of Toyota Hilux

The Toyota Hilux was introduced in 1968 as a compact pickup truck and has been in continuous production ever since — making it one of the longest-running vehicle nameplates in automotive history. Over eight generations, the Hilux has built a reputation for mechanical resilience that few vehicles in any class can match: it has been driven across the Sahara, operated in Antarctic expeditions, and used by aid agencies in some of the world’s most inaccessible terrain for decades.

In Iceland, the Hilux’s combination of body-on-frame construction, selectable 4×4, high ground clearance, and diesel range make it a natural fit for highland F-road driving. The camper box fitted to the Hertz Iceland fleet version extends that capability into self-sufficient overnight travel — turning what is already one of the world’s most proven 4×4 trucks into an all-in-one highland camping platform.

Toyota Hilux hire with Hertz Iceland means choosing a vehicle with more real-world 4×4 evidence behind it than almost any other truck on the market.

Road Trips with the Toyota Hilux Camper

Road Trips with the Toyota Hilux Camper

The Hilux Camper goes where hotel bookings can’t follow — and sleeps 3 adults wherever the track ends. These routes are built around that freedom.

Landmannalaugar Highland Camp via F208

KEFReykjavíkHellaF208Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar is Iceland’s most celebrated highland destination — multicoloured rhyolite mountains, natural geothermal hot springs, and the trailhead of the Laugavegur hiking route. Getting there requires F-road 208, a highland track that standard rental vehicles cannot access. The Hilux’s selectable 4×4 with low range handles the volcanic gravel approach and river crossings with confidence. At Landmannalaugar, the camper box means you stay overnight in the highland interior rather than driving back to the main road — waking to morning light on the rhyolite mountains before the day-trippers arrive. The designated campsite has basic toilet and shower facilities. Bring your sleeping bags, a portable stove, and food for the duration. Check [safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide](https://safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide) and [road.is](https://www.road.is) before departure.

F-Road Tip: F208 typically opens late June — check road.is the morning you depart. Low range recommended for river crossings. Book the Landmannalaugar campsite in advance for July visits.

Kjölur Route (F35) — Highland Crossing Camp

KEFGullfossF35 KjölurHveravellirKerlingarfjöllAkureyri

The Kjölur route is Iceland’s most accessible highland crossing — and the Hilux Camper is the only vehicle in the Hertz Iceland fleet that lets you sleep on it. Drive F35 from Gullfoss north through the remote Hveravellir geothermal area and the Kerlingarfjöll mountains, camping overnight at Hveravellir’s designated site where the hot spring pools provide a natural warm-up after a highland driving day. The Hilux’s diesel range handles the Gullfoss-to-Akureyri distance without fuel anxiety, and the camper box means the crossing becomes a 2–3 night highland experience rather than a single long day. Drop the vehicle at Hertz Akureyri Airport — [[NEED: confirm if one-way from KEF to Akureyri is available for this category]].

Best Time: Late June to early September. F35 is one of the first highland routes to open. Check road.is before the highland section. Visit [safe.hertz.is](https://safe.hertz.is) for highland preparation. Book Hveravellir campsite in advance.

Winter Ring Road Camp

KEFSouth CoastJökulsárlónEast FjordsAkureyriReykjavíkKEF

Iceland’s Ring Road in winter — from the inside of a camper box — is a different experience from any hotel-based winter itinerary. The Hilux’s 4×4 with winter tyres handles the cleared Ring Road confidently, and the enclosed camper box provides dry, weatherproof sleeping at designated campsites along the route. Winter campsites in Iceland are fewer and less serviced than in summer — research opening dates and facilities in advance, and carry emergency supplies. F-roads are closed in winter; stay on cleared Route 1 and standard gravel. Check road.is and [en.vedur.is](https://en.vedur.is) before every departure. For winter camping safety guidance, visit [safe.hertz.is](https://safe.hertz.is).

Winter Camping Tip: Sleeping bags rated to at least -15°C are essential for winter camping in Iceland. Check campsite winter opening status before booking — many highland sites are closed October to May. Allow extra driving time for shorter daylight hours and slower winter road conditions.

Toyota Hilux Camper Rental FAQ

    • What does the camper box include?
The fitted camper box includes a double bed sleeping platform for up to 3 adults, a kitchenette with sink, hob (range), and refrigerator, a dinette seating area with table, and storage throughout. Our KEF fleet team provides a kitchen equipment kit at pickup. What you need to bring: sleeping bags and bedding (not included), and your own groceries and food supplies. Everything else you need to cook and sleep is already in the vehicle. Bring your own sleeping bags. Iceland’s designated highland campsites (including Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk) have basic toilet and shower facilities.
    • Can 4 or 5 people rent one Hilux Camper?
The Toyota Hilux seats 5 adults in the cab, but the camper box sleeps 3 adults only. We strongly recommend a maximum of 3 adults per vehicle for any camping trip — a group of 4 or 5 would need to arrange separate sleeping accommodation for the extra people at each stop, which removes the core benefit of the camper. For groups of 4–6, two vehicles or a larger RV option is the practical solution.
    • Can I drive the Hilux Camper on F-roads?
Yes — in summer only. The Toyota Hilux Camper is permitted on F-roads and Highland tracks including the routes to Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, and the Kjölur route (F35). F-roads are closed in winter. Always check road.is for current road status and safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide to confirm vehicle eligibility before entering Highland areas.
    • Where can I pick up and return the Hilux Camper?
The Toyota Hilux Camper is available for pickup and return at Keflavík International Airport (KEF) only. It cannot be collected or returned at any other Hertz Iceland location. KEF desk hours: open 24/7 in summer (1 May to 30 November); 05:30–02:00 in winter (1 December to 30 April).
    • Is the Hilux Camper good for winter camping in Iceland?
Yes — on main roads and at designated campsites that are open in winter. The Hilux’s 4×4 with winter tyres handles the Ring Road and standard gravel routes confidently, and the enclosed camper box provides dry, weatherproof sleeping in Iceland’s winter conditions. F-roads are closed in winter. Bring sleeping bags rated to at least -15°C. Check campsite winter opening status before booking, and always check road.is and en.vedur.is before every departure. For winter driving and camping safety guidance, visit safe.hertz.is.
    • Where can I camp in Iceland with the Hilux Camper?
Overnight stays must be at designated campsites only — wild camping is restricted under Icelandic law. Iceland has hundreds of official campsites, including at highland destinations like Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk, and along the full Ring Road. Book popular sites in advance for July. The Camping Card 2026 available via Hertz Iceland provides discounted access to campsites across the country.
    • Does Hertz Iceland offer Roadside Assistance?
Yes. Roadside Assistance can be added at the rental desk at pickup — not bookable online in advance. It costs 1,990 ISK/day standalone, or 990 ISK/day when added with MAX Coverage. If you need assistance during your rental, pay the service fee at the time, then bring your receipt when you return the car — we’ll refund the covered amount to your card on file. Emergency line: +354 858 0499 (24/7).
