This past weekend, runners from Iceland and around the world gathered in Hveragerði for the 15th edition of Hengill Ultra, Iceland’s largest trail running event. Set among the rugged mountains, geothermal valleys, lava fields, and volcanic landscapes of the Hengill area, the event once again showcased some of the country’s most spectacular running terrain.
At Hertz Iceland, we were proud to be an official sponsor of Hengill Ultra 2026 and to support an event that celebrates adventure, endurance, and Iceland’s unique natural environment.
A Weekend of Trail Running in Iceland
Hengill Ultra offers something for runners of all experience levels, with distances ranging from 5 km and 10 km routes to challenging 26 km, 53 km, and 106 km ultra races. The event takes place around the Hengill volcanic area near Hveragerði, where participants run through geothermal landscapes, mountain trails, lava fields, and some of the most breathtaking scenery found anywhere in Iceland.
Over two days, hundreds of runners pushed themselves across demanding terrain, testing both their physical and mental strength while enjoying the incredible views that have made Hengill Ultra one of Iceland’s most respected trail running events.
