Third-Party Liability (TPL) and Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) are included in your rental by default — but we recommend adding extra layers of protection, such as Gravel Protection (GP), Sand & Ash Protection (SAAP), and Tyres & Wheels coverage, given Iceland’s gravel roads, unpredictable weather, and remote driving conditions.
Breaking it Down
TPL and CDW are built into every Hertz Iceland rental at no extra cost and satisfy the legal minimum. However, we recommend upgrading to Medium or MAX Coverage, since Basic Cover alone still leaves you liable for an excess on covered damage and doesn’t include Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW), Theft Protection (TP), Windscreen & Headlight Protection (WSP/WP), Gravel Protection (GP), Sand & Ash Protection (SAAP), or Tyres & Wheels coverage — all relevant on Icelandic roads, especially outside the capital area. The extra layers of protection mean fewer surprises if a stray rock chips your windscreen on the Ring Road or gravel damages a tire on a highland detour.
