Minimum age 23 for the 4×4/SUV/minivan category, plus the same license and payment requirements as any rental — no special license class is needed.
Breaking it Down
No extra driving qualification is legally required to rent a 4×4, but F-road/highland driving requires a vehicle that’s actually F-road certified (not all 4x4s are — EV/PHEV 4x4s generally aren’t due to battery positioning), and 2WD vehicles are strictly barred from F-roads, Kjölur (Rd 35) and Kaldidalur (Rd 550). Off-road driving off marked tracks is illegal and voids all protection.
