US residents can rent with a valid US driver’s license (English script, no IDP needed), a passport, and a physical credit/eligible debit card in the main driver’s name — no special US-specific paperwork required.
Breaking it Down
US license is printed in English/Roman script, no International Driving Permit is required. You’ll need: license held 1+ year, a physical card (Visa/Mastercard/Amex, or a debit card with a 16-digit number starting 4 or 5 — Apple Pay, Google Pay, e-wallets and virtual/digital cards are not accepted), and to meet the minimum age for your chosen vehicle category (20 for economy/compact, 23 for 4×4/minivan, 25 for prestige/luxury). Note US personal auto insurance generally doesn’t extend to Iceland-specific risks (gravel, sand/ash, F-roads) — see Q22.
